‘There’s no excuse!’ Michael Johnson blasts GB’s Hughes’ ‘blatant’ 100m disqualification

The BBC’s Michael Johnson lambasted Zharnel Hughes’ careless false start in the 100m that resulted in his disqualification from the race. Mr Johnson, a previous Olympic champion for the USA, stated that there was no excuse for a false start.

Mr Johnson said on Hughes’ disqualification: “This was a blatant false start.

“There is just no excuse for a false start at a championship.

“He will be incredibly disappointed.

“What are you trying to do? Are you trying to time it?

“Are you not focused on reacting to the gun?

“I don’t know what was going on there but I will maintain for the rest of my life that there is no excuse for a false start.”

Zharnel Hughes told the BBC regarding his false start: “I’m gutted right now.

“When we went up on set, my left calf cramped up on me.

“So with the cramp, I moved. Gutted.”

He added: “It was out of my control.

“Unfortunately, my calf cramped when I went up on set and I moved.

“I can’t describe it. It hurts a lot. Second time again. I’m just disappointed.”

Mr Hughes also told the BBC he was confident he would have won a medal in the 100m final following the conclusion of the race.

He said: “I feel as if I was in that finals, I would have definitely walked away with a medal.

“No doubt about it.”

Italy’s Marcell Jacobs secured the gold medal with 9.80 while USA’s Fred Kerley won silver in a time of 9.84 ahead of Canada’s Andre de Grasse, who ran 9.89 for the bronze medal.
