These are the new Instagram Threads features after its first software update

Meta launched Threads, its Twitter rival, earlier this month. It has now rolled out the first major update for Threads that brings a bunch of new features and improvements to the app.

Simultaneously, there’s a separate report on the app losing half its active users in just seven days. Threads saw a very rapid increase in user signups with more than 145 million having joined the app so far.

Instagram Threads new features

Instagram has rolled out a new update for Threads on iOS. This information was shared by Threads’ Cameron Roth who said that users might have to restart the app to see the new features or wait until the end of the day. As for the new features, here’s a look at what’s the latest in Threads:

  • Translations are now available on Threads so just like Instagram you’ll be able to see translated text posts.
  • There’s a new ‘Follow’s tab in the activity tab that has a heart icon. When you tap on this you’ll see a separate tab to see who followed you on Threads.
  • Instagram has also made it easier to follow people on Threads by adding a shortcut ‘+’ icon next to profiles in the thread replies page.
  • There’s also an option to follow people you follow on Instagram. This is from the following tab, and you can get the list by selecting the ‘see all’ option.
  • This update also improves activity feed scrolling, and loading time along with a few small crash fixes which are now at 0.02 percent. It also fixes a handful of other small bugs.

Threads is losing its active users pretty fast, claims report

Coming to the separate report about Threads losing half its active users, it’s from the data-tracking site Similar Web. According to this site, Threads had over 49 million daily active users on Android on July 7th. But by July 14th it dropped to 23.6 million active users. That’s a sharp drop in just seven days. Threads did see a crazy amount of interest when it launched, and its integration with Instagram made signing up on the app easy. But it looks like the app will need more features to sustain its user base.
