Chinese tech and gaming giant Tencent is working on a new technology that would allow consumers to use their palm prints to pay for a product or service, as per a report by the MIT Technology Review. The report is based on a video that appeared in late September on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok.
“In the video, a person who appears to be a WeChat employee can be heard instructing people to put their hand in front of a recognition device and record their palm prints in exchange for the special soda deal. “New feature of WeChat Pay. Everyone is welcome to try our service and support us,” the voice reportedly said in the video.
As per the report, the feature was rolled out “half a year ago” and had recently been released in the city of Guangzhou. Tencent owns WeChat Pay and has reportedly been testing the feature using palm-print payment devices in China for several months now.
The new type of biometric verification involves distinguishing different palms, which requires it to analyse the visible lines and also the veins beneath the skin.
The Covid situation in China is still grim and may help Tencent and WeChat Pay when it comes to the wide adoption of the new form of biometric verification where all users need to do to make a payment is wave their hands up to a few inches from the camera, with no facial or fingerprint recognition required. According to the report, WeChat Pay is already used by over 800 million individuals and 50 million vendors in China.
