Thomas Tuchel makes ruthless demand of Chelsea team after Arsenal win in warning to rivals
Thomas Tuchel insists his Chelsea players “have to improve” despite making it two wins from two to start the new Premier League season by beating rivals Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday. The Londoners have now scored five goals and conceded none to rise to the summit of England’s top flight.
Romelu Lukaku was excellent on his second Chelsea debut as the Blues ran out 2-0 winners, the Belgian scoring the opener on 15 minutes before Reece James doubled the lead to cap off a brilliant team move.
Yet despite moving top of the table, joint with Liverpool who Chelsea face at Anfield next weekend, Tuchel wants to see even more from his players.
And that will serve as a warning to their rivals for the title Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United.
The German coach said to Sky Sports: “I had a feeling in the first half we lacked a bit of sharpness and were a bit passive. I think we had a long training week with double sessions and were a bit leggy. We deserved to win but still room to improve.”
Asked about Lukaku’s performance, Tuchel continued: “I’m very happy with the way he’s integrated already. He’s a very democratic leader, talks to everybody, very friendly, very humble and totally competitive.
“He gives something to our game that we didn’t have so much. You cannot start better than with a goal.
“He almost scored a second one and he assisted some half-chances and chances. It’s a good start. We have to improve from here.
“I didn’t expect to much but I wanted to see his capability to adapt and to link up, that is what he did very good and the guys like to play with each other.
“I don’t know if it is possible to manage games in the Premier League, in some moments it was too open. They created some overloads on each side and we had to overcome but we were in control defensively.
“We could create some chances. In the Premier League when you don’t score the third or fourth you can never be sure.”
