Three Jesse Lingard alternatives Newcastle can sign in January as Man Utd star does U-turn

Newcastle have received a fresh transfer blow after it emerged that Jesse Lingard will remain at Manchester United until the end of the season. Lingard had been linked with a January move to the Magpies but will instead see out the remainder of his contract.

The 29-year-old’s deal runs out in the summer of 2022 and he will have several clubs lining up for his services.

However, Newcastle will likely want to find an alternative in the winter window. Eddie Howe’s side have at times lacked creativity and could do with an injection of quality.

Newcastle are 19th in the Premier League, are three points from safety and Howe has been given the tough job of dragging them away from danger.

The former Bournemouth boss will likely be backed with a big transfer budget in January following the incredible £305million takeover in October.

A consortium, part backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, have already made huge plans, with director Amanda Staveley promising ‘world-class’ arrivals over the coming years.

Should Newcastle fail to sign Lingard – with the Telegraph reporting that he will leave for free in the summer – then they have the resources to buy other targets in January. Express Sport looks at who those might be.

Aaron Ramsey

Ramsey is one of the names who has been frequently linked with Newcastle since the October takeover.

The Arsenal legend has struggled since departing the Emirates Stadium and signing for Juventus in 2019.

He has played just five times in all competitions this season and has suffered a tough time with injuries and a loss of form.

Ramsey has been widely rumoured as being keen on returning to the Premier League and the upcoming window could provide a decent opportunity.

Adam Lallana

Brighton have apparently granted Newcastle permission to speak to Dan Ashworth for the vacant director of football role at St James’ Park.

The Guardian were among a couple of sites to report that the former FA technical director could be heading to assist Howe and the club’s new owners with the football operation.

And Ashworth could take a couple of players with him if he is appointed.

Lallana is an experienced attacking midfielder who would add quality to Howe’s squad.

The 33-year-old has struggled with injuries in recent years but would likely make a positive impact. He has played 14 times for Brighton this campaign.
