Tiktok: TikTok ban continues, here’s the latest country to join the list – Times of India

Another country has banned the Chinese app TikTok on government devices. Australia is banning TikTok on government phones, following other countries in barring the video app over security concerns. “The federal and state governments will announce a ban of the app on government-provided phone devices this week once a seven-month-long review of security risks posed by social media platforms is completed,” reported The Australian newspaper, The Age.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese agreed to a government-wide ban on the use of TikTok after the completion of a review by the Home Affairs department, the newspaper reported. The Victorian government too will reportedly join the federal government in banning the TikTok app in its current form from all government devices citing national security concerns. Incidentally, the announcement comes just days after Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews returned from a surprise visit to China, the state’s largest trading partner.
Ban aimed “to keep the country safe from international security threats”
A spokesman for Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil, whose department is conducting the social media review examining TikTok, reportedly said last month that the aim of the assessment into the social media giant was to keep the country safe from international security threats. “The review currently underway into social media use has a wide remit to explore ways of keeping Australians safe and we’ll consider all its recommendations,” the spokesman had told the paper.
Countries that have banned or restricted TikTok
With this Australia joins the United States, Britain, New Zealand, Canada, Belgium and the European Commission that have already banned the app from official devices. India banned TikTok and 100-plus other Chinese apps in June 2020 on national security concerns. The ministry of electronics and information technology’s (Meity) order stated that the apps were “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, security of state and public order.”
