Todd Boehly ‘stormed Chelsea dressing room’ after Brighton loss

Todd Boehly reportedly entered the Chelsea dressing room after the Blues’ defeat to Brighton labelling the club’s current issues as ’embarrassing’. The west Londoners have now failed to in each of their last six games and must overcome a two-goal first-leg deficit to Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday to save their season.

Chelsea have endured a terrible campaign in what is Boehly’s first year of ownership. The Blues currently languish in the bottom half of the Premier League and are out of the FA Cup meaning the Champions League is their only chance of winning any silverware between now and the end of the season.

Real Madrid will visit Stamford Bridge on Tuesday as Frank Lampard’s side look to overturn their disappointing first-leg defeat. The importance of the upcoming fixture was reportedly not lost on Boehly who took it upon himself to give a rallying cry to the club’s players.

The Telegraph report that the American entered the Chelsea dressing room after Saturday’s abject 2-1 defeat to Brighton to air his views. He is said to have labelled the club’s current predicament as ’embarrassing’. He was joined by fellow co-owners Behdad Eghbali and Hansjorg Wyss with the trio waiting until Lampard had finished delivering his verdict before sharing their own thoughts.

While Boehly was keen to criticise the players for his performances he looked to end his message on a positive note, suggesting Tuesday’s encounter was a chance to start putting things right and getting the fans back onside.

There was also an acceptance of his own responsibility in the Blues’ current plight after encountering many issues in the months since he purchased the keys to Stamford Bridge from Roman Abramovich.

Boehly’s decision to enter the dressing room came after he remonstrated with supporters after the full-time whistle as fans sitting near him in the stands voiced their frustration.

The American tycoon could be seen gesturing with his hands outstretched while fans shouted down to him from the stand above.

Chelsea boss Lampard also criticised his players after the game, stressing that their performance was simply not good enough as he looked ahead to midweek.

“I’m disappointed on every level. The better team won,” he said. “They could have won by more. They played like a team. They’ve been together a long time.

“Not good enough. All the basic parts of football – to fight, to run – we were short on. Not a question of commitment as such. We have a big game on Tuesday [against Real Madrid]. There’s no point being too down but we have to understand why today went the way it did.”
