Tokyo Olympics: Now, Vinesh Phogat demands physio’s accreditation | Tokyo Olympics News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: After table tennis player Manika Batra’s demand to get ‘venue access’ for her personal coach Sanmay Paranjape, a similar request by star wrestler Vinesh Phogat has reached Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and Sports Authority of India (SAI). Vinesh wants her physiotherapist Poornima R Ngomdir to accompany her to the Tokyo Olympics on a Games-specific accreditation.
Vinesh has been training in Europe since late April and is scheduled to leave for Tokyo from her current training base in Hungary on July 26 along with personal coach Woller Akos. Her women’s freestyle 53kg competition begins on August 5. Vinesh has trained in Poland, Estonia and Hungary for the Olympic Games and, in her previous 40-day European stint in December-February, the medal contender had trained in Hungary and Poland.
Throughout her exposure trips, Poornima remained part of Vinesh’s support team. Coach Akos has already been accredited in official capacity and will stay in the Athletes Village. Poornima’s name wasn’t part of the official contingent list shared by the national Olympic committee (IOA) with the Tokyo 2020 organising committee (OC).
Vinesh’s last-minute demand for Poornima’s accreditation has put the IOA and SAI officials in a tight spot as it’s a fresh headache for the contingent members in the Village. Vinesh believes that Poornima’s presence would be crucial during her training sessions in Tokyo. It’s been learned that Vinesh has demanded immediate response on her request since, if approved, her physio would need to get her RT-PCR tested for Covid-19 in Hungary and mandatorily upload her 72-hour test report prior to Tokyo departure on the organising committee’s health monitoring app (OCHA). In case her demand was rejected, Poornima will return to India.
On Manika’s issue, it’s been learned that it’s been actively pursued with the OC and that Paranjape’s upgraded accreditation might be issued ahead of Manika’s opening round matches on Saturday. It will allow Paranjape to sit by the table side in Manika’s coaching corner.
