Tom Cruise Was ‘Crying’ Over Val Kilmer Reunion in Top Gun: Maverick: ‘I Got Emotional’

Top Gun: Maverick is filled with high-flying action scenes, but star Tom Cruise recently reflected on one of the movie’s more poignant moments.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Cruise touched on the scene that sees Maverick reunite with Val Kilmer’s Iceman, saying filming the reunion brought him to tears.

“I just want to say that was pretty emotional,” Cruise said. “I’ve known Val for decades, and for him to come back and play that character, he’s such a powerful actor that he instantly became that character again. I mean, you’re looking at Iceman… I was crying. I got emotional. He’s such a brilliant actor, and I love his work.”

Cruise and Kilmer appeared together in 1986’s Top Gun as Maverick and Iceman. Kilmer’s return to reprise his role in Top Gun: Maverick was the actor’s highest-profile appearance since he was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015, making the reunion very emotional for a multitiude of reasons.

The pair’s memorable scene in Top Gun: Maverick surely contributed to the film’s six Oscar nominations, which include Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Music, Editing, Visual Effects, and Sound.

Top Gun: Maverick also dominated at the box office, earning over $700 million domestically en route to becoming one of the top five highest-grossing movies in North American history. Following the movie’s success, there are even talks between Cruise and co-star Miles Teller about a possible Top Gun 3.
