Tom Daley recalled the first thing he said to US Open champion Emma Raducanu after meeting her at the Met Gala in New York City. The Olympic champion attended the exclusive event while Raducanu received a last-minute invite after her Flushing Meadows heroics.
Both British stars experienced terrific success this summer, with Daley finally winning Olympic gold in diving while Raducanu burst onto the scene at Wimbledon before winning her maiden Grand Slam against all odds.
Daley attended his first Met Gala in 2021 and he loved every minute, and crossed paths with the teenage tennis star when coming out the toilet.
“I remember coming out of the toilet and she was there and I was just like, ‘Oh, my gosh, congratulations. I’m Tom. I think you’re awesome. What you’ve done and what you’re going to continue to do in the future is going to be so great,’” Daley told GQ in his recent cover interview.
“And I think she probably was a bit like, ‘Oh, my gosh, why is he talking to me?’

“I just went in anyway. I was in a car with [RuPaul’s Drag Race star] Gigi Goode and I asked, ‘Can you tell?’ and they were like, ‘No.’
“The only time you could tell was if I hoisted my leg up. But it was a conversation starter.”
Daley clearly enjoyed his experience at the fundraiser and recalled other insane moments from his time at the event, which was held in early September.
Speaking elsewhere about his experiences at the Met Gala, Daley told Vogue, “My most surreal moment was going to the toilet and peeing next to Troye Sivan, then Rihanna opening the door to the toilet.
“Then walking out and Shawn Mendes coming into the toilet, then hanging out with Maisie Williams outside the toilet.”
While the toilets were clearly the place to be at the Met Gala, Daley found himself in a familiar position on the podium in Tokyo this summer.
Daley added another bronze to the two he won at London 2012 and Rio 2016 after winning gold in the 10m synchronised diving category alongside Matty Lee.
He described the elation and emotions that came over him when the national anthem played with the gold around his neck: “I wasn’t just teary; I was blubbering. I couldn’t even speak. It was just so overwhelming.”
