Tony Gilroy has confirmed that a Rogue One director’s cut will never see the light of day because we have already seen “the best possible version” of that movie.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Gilroy confirmed that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story would not be getting the Snyder cut treatment because he feels that a better edit of the 2016 movie could not exist.
“That was the absolute best possible version you could ever have,” Gilroy said in response to questions about whether a potential Rogue One director’s cut could surface in the future. “Oh my God. No. No.
“I’m not going to go into any more detail,” he added. “But the more authority that you hear people talk about online about what happened on that movie, the less they know. That’s all that needs to be said. Maybe someday… but no. That’s the absolute best version of that movie that you could possibly imagine in the time that was given.”
Rogue One underwent extensive reshoots ahead of its theatrical release, and Gilroy has previously said the ending “changed quite a bit” from the original version. There were also changes to the character intros, a scrapped opening crawl, and tons of footage left on the cutting room floor as part of the post-production process.
As such, there were a lot of big moments in the various Rogue One trailers that didn’t end up making it into the final version of the movie. In fact, one behind-the-scenes clip from the film depicted a gritty direction that has more in common with traditional war films than the events that followed in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.
While it’s clear that an alternate cut of Rogue One is not on the cards, we will be learning more about what happened in the events leading up to that movie as Andor Season 2 will cover the “three days before Rogue One” in its final episodes.
Gilroy is currently deep in production on the second and final season of Andor, and is working towards having it ready for an August 2024 premiere date on Disney Plus.
