Tottenham chief Daniel Levy can hand Postecoglou his own Gus Poyet for £35m
Daniel Levy could give Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou his own Gus Poyet this summer. The path from Chelsea to Spurs is not often trodden, but with Conor Gallagher put up for sale and the Lilywhites seriously interested, he could become the latest in a short line of goalscoring midfielders to make the switch across London.
Poyet was a smash hit at Stamford Bridge between 1997 and 2001, scoring an impressive 36 goals in 105 league games. The Uruguayan’s instinct for the back of the net continued at Spurs, where he enjoyed three more positive years.
Tottenham boss Postecoglou would naturally love a player of Poyet’s calibre to help him through his first campaign in north London. And although not yet as accomplished, many feel that Gallagher can go on to achieve great things in the Premier League.
According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea have decided to put the 23-year-old in the shop window, despite Mauricio Pochettino giving him chances to impress in pre-season.
Like Poyet, Gallagher has shown that he has what it takes to find the net with regularity at the top level. The England international announced himself to the top division when he bagged eight goals in 34 matches on loan at Crystal Palace in 2021/22.
A season back at Stamford Bridge last term saw him appear in all bar three of their league matches, but the Chelsea youth product may be forced to move on over the coming weeks, having been slapped with a £35million price tag.
Postecoglou could have surplus cash to throw at transfer recruits if Harry Kane joins Bayern Munich before the end of the window. The German giants’ latest £68.5m bid was turned down, but they are expected to come back for more.
Worryingly for Spurs fans, Kane reportedly has no intentions of signing a new contract and would relish the chance to work under Thomas Tuchel at the Allianz Arena.
