Tottenham could appoint Monchi for Ange Postecoglou transfer plans

Tottenham could make renowned Sevilla expert Monchi their next sporting director, according to reports. The director of football could leave the Europa League champions for the second time in his career and is said to feel he is caught in a power struggle at his current club.

Spurs are on the hunt for a new director to oversee their transfer activity after Fabio Paratici’s resignation in April. And with Ange Postecoglou on Tuesday appointed Spurs’ new manager on a four-year contract, the north London club now want a new executive decision-maker in place as the Australian reshapes the squad.

Monchi is one of the most famed sporting directors in the world. And per AS, Spurs are interested in bringing him in with the former Sevilla goalkeeper having doubts about staying in his role. That is apparently because he feels he has lost power over major decisions.

The Spaniard – previously a major target for Arsenal in 2019 – has also had significant disagreements with the board, notably over the sacking of Julen Lopetegui last year and the subsequent hiring of Jorge Sampaoli. That means interest from other clubs could sway him towards an exit.

Spurs are claimed to be one of those clubs eager to snatch Monchi away and it is little wonder why. He has helped Sevilla to make huge profits on a great number of players including some he discovered who came through their academy – such as Sergio Ramos, Jesus Navas and Jose Antonio Reyes – and others they have signed.

Dani Alves is the most famous arrival of Monchi’s having joined Sevilla as an unknown teenager from Bahia before winning back-to-back UEFA Cups and joining Barcelona to go down as one of the best right-backs of all time. Monchi also helped Sevilla turned over nice profits with Julio Baptista, Carlos Bacca, Diego Carlos and Jules Kounde.

In addition, he brought in the likes of Ivan Rakitic, Ever Banega and Freddie Kanoute who have gone down among Sevilla’s greatest ever players. The 54-year-old director also had some joy in his two-year spell at Roma between 2017 and 2019 where he brought in players like Nicolo Zaniolo, Aleksandar Kolarov and Lorenzo Pellegrini.

While his stint in Italy was not as successful as hoped, Monchi’s incoming and outgoing business in Seville means he remains one of the most admired directors in the game. And Daniel Levy is keeping a keen eye while at the same time looking to help Postecoglou with some ins and outs.

The Daily Mail say Postecoglou, brought in from Celtic, has his eyes on Leicester midfielder James Maddison, Brentford goalkeeper David Raya and Wolves’ Max Kilman. While the Telegraph say Manchester United captain Harry Maguire is another target.

It is thought that signing Maguire would go down well with Spurs captain Harry Kane, who faces a huge summer. Real Madrid and Man United are both keen on the Londoners’ all-time top goalscorer whose contract expires in 12 months’ time.
