Tottenham give in to Postecoglou request as Maddison transfer ‘talks opened’

Tottenham have reportedly ‘opened talks’ with Leicester in a bid to sign James Maddison this summer with Ange Postecoglou keen to get a deal over the line quickly. Spurs are set for a huge summer transfer window, largely centred around whether Harry Kane will stay at the club or not.

But investment will also be needed to be made in the playing squad regardless of Kane’s future following a disappointing campaign in north London. Postecoglou was finally named as Tottenham’s next permanent manager this week and he’s already said to have made Maddison his No 1 target.

Fabrizo Romano claims Postecoglou has already ‘asked’ the Tottenham board to make a deal for Maddison happen. And it appears as though Spurs are willing to give their new manager what he wants with talkSPORT reporting that talks are now taking place between Tottenham and Leicester regarding a possible transfer.

It’s reported that Leicester will be seeking as much as £60m for the England international.

Newcastle are reported to be Tottenham’s closest rivals for Maddison’s signing, who looks certain to leave Leicester following their relegation to the Championship. But the report suggests that Leicester’s asking price may be too much for Newcastle, despite qualifying for the Champions League and their mega-rich Saudi owners.

Newcastle are still limited in what they can do this summer due to Financial Fair Play regulations having been unable to raise cash from player sales in the past few transfer windows. And it looks as though they could pull out of the race to sign Maddison if Leicester stick to their guns on wanting £60m for the midfielder.
