Tottenham have created £40m transfer problem for Postecoglou because of Kane
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy might have created a problem for Ange Postecoglou with his stance on Harry Kane’s future. Levy is adamant that Kane should see out the remaining 12 months of his contract, fending off interest from the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid.
Interested clubs have been told to pay a premium fee for the England captain. United have been made aware that Spurs will not sell to a Premier League rival, while Madrid have supposedly been quoted an eye-watering £200million price tag.
But that stance could be set to blow up in Spurs’ face. Transfer target David Raya remains in the same situation as Kane, with only a year left on his contract at Brentford, but the North Londoners are reportedly attempting to drive down the goalkeeper’s valuation.
Spurs desperately need a new shot-stopper this summer. Long-serving stalwart Hugo Lloris has seen his powers wane in recent years and has become susceptible to injuries, infamously coming off at half-time as his side trailed Newcastle 5-0 in April.
A replacement for the club captain will reportedly be sought this summer, with Raya believed to be top of their shortlist. 90min report that Brentford value the 27-year-old at £40m, but Spurs are keen to drive down the price with the player’s contract expiring next summer. That means the Bees risk losing the player for free if he stays – though that is considered an unlikely eventuality.
However, Spurs’ position does not stand up to much scrutiny if Levy is insisting that clubs who want Kane need to pay £200m for a player with 12 months on his contract. Clubs who are in negotiations to sell players to Spurs will simply apply the same logic – meaning Brentford will demand the full £40m to lose their shot-stopper.
Brentford have even said they are willing to let Raya leave this summer. Technical director Lee Dykes told The Beautiful Game podcast: “We sat in front of David and said listen, ‘If you go beyond us, then that’s the time for you to go.
“I think he’s one of the best in the Premier League which puts him one of the best in the world. He’s in a really good moment as a goalkeeper and he’s well within his rights to say, ‘Maybe I want to explore my options’. That’s fine. No probs.
“We signed him again in 2019, that first summer. I’d seen him come through his loan spells in the lower leagues and really develop at Blackburn. It was a great deal for us but effectively we’ve had a plan for him and we’re okay with that.”
This is therefore a deal where Spurs must compromise, pay the fee and give Postecoglou a goalkeeper for the start of pre-season. Levy’s stance on Kane could make future negotiations that little bit harder.
