Tottenham have four problems Nuno Espirito Santo must solve during international break

Tottenham stormed to the top of the Premier League table in August as they secured three consecutive 1-0 victories. But their season headed south last month as they suffered three heavy defeats on the return from the international break.

They stemmed the flow of misery on Sunday by defeating Aston Villa to move up to eighth in the table.

And Express Sport takes a look at four problems Nuno Espirito Santo can solve during the international break.

Find consistency

Despite the victory over Villa at the weekend, Tottenham’s season thus far can be broken down into two parts – their good run of form and their bad run of form.

Nuno’s side were hardly setting the top flight on fire when they topped the table in August but they were doing enough to grind out victories.

They were dismal in their three defeats, conceding three goals against Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Spurs are seasoned campaigners and will be well aware that to compete for a place in the top four, they need to find consistency.

Big swings in form and results just won’t cut the mustard.

Keep Son Heung-min happy

Fortunately for Spurs, Son Heung-min has started the season in his usual rich vein of form.

Without his input, the north Londoners would surely be in a perilous position towards the foot of the table.

Tottenham have scored six Premier League goals this season and Son has been involved in five of them, courtesy of three strikes and two assists.

If Kane isn’t going to do the business this season, Son needs to. And he is.

So club chiefs now need to keep him happy and ensure everything is in place for him to continue to be the match-winner.

The style of football

Nuno is a pragmatic manager but he does possess a flexible approach. At Wolves he liked to play with a back three. At Spurs he has been playing with a back four.

But there is an argument that he is being too cautious and defensive-minded in the capital.

In Kane and Son, Spurs have two of the best attackers in the league and they need to be provided with the opportunities to score goals.

Tottenham fans like to see their side attack. They soon turned against Jose Mourinho when his defensive approach was failing to reap the rewards.

Six goals in seven games is not good enough for Spurs and Nuno should implement a more free-flowing style of football if he is to get his side firing and appease disillusioned fans.
