Tottenham may revive interest in old target with opportunity arising due to Kylian Mbappe

Tottenham might revisit their summer interest in Real Madrid star Marco Asensio amid reports that the midfielder might not be offered a new contract. Speculation in Spain suggests that Asensio might depart the Bernabeu to make way for Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe has long been linked with a move to Madrid and the summer might present the best chance for a deal to happen.

The Frenchman is out of contract at Paris Saint-Germain at the end of this season and could seek a blockbuster transfer to Los Blancos.

Real had several offers for the forward turned down in the last summer transfer window.

But he could now join in the summer if he wants to depart on a free transfer deal.

Mbappe joining Real could have repercussions for a couple of fringe players in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.

One of those includes Asensio, who will have just a year remaining on his deal in the summer.

According to Spanish outlet AS, the Madrid outfit are unsure whether to hand the Spaniard a new contract.

That could allow him to seek a transfer either in the summer or it could see him run down his deal and leave for free in 2023.

Lo Celso, signed in a deal that could still rise to a similar figure, has moved to Villarreal in a temporary deal.

Asensio might come a little cheaper as Real might hope to make some money on the playmaker in a bid to recoup any funds they spend on the likes of Mbappe and possible transfer target Erling Haaland.

Where Asensio fits in under Antonio Conte would remain to be seen.

Conte already has a wealth of attacking talent in his squad and might first have to shift players towards the exit door.
