Tottenham ‘planning Enrique talks’ as Spurs look to hijack Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur could launch a hijack attempt on one of Chelsea’s head coach targets, with talks reportedly planned with Luis Enrique. The managerless London rivals are primed to go head-to-head in pursuing a new boss this summer, and Enrique is a prime candidate.

According to The Telegraph, Spurs are stepping up their search for Antonio Conte’s permanent successor after his sacking in March.

It’s claimed that the Lilywhites plan to meet Enrique, potentially this week, joining Chelsea in hosting face-to-face talks.

However, he hasn’t emerged as the club’s preferred, and there has been no indication that he will be offered the job immediately or at the end of the campaign.

Cristian Stellini has been placed in interim charge until the summer, but a quick appointment could appeal to Daniel Levy, with the club’s top-four hopes in jeopardy.

Enrique is thought to be eager to return to club management after two stints as Spain manager, leaving his latest post after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Another reported target out of work is Julian Nagelsmann, who Bayern Munich replaced with Thomas Tuchel in March.

Chelsea co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart met the German last week, but he is also near the top of Spurs’ shortlist.

The report claims that Burnley boss Vincent Kompany has admirers in north London, as does Feyenoord’s Arne Slot.

Mauricio Pochettino is another name refusing to go away, and fans would likely receive the Argentine’s return positively.

But it’s claimed that Spurs currently don’t plan to make a concrete approach to reappoint him after his 2019 exit.

Enrique would be an alluring appointment, no reason more so than his successful stint at Barcelona from 2014 to 2017.

The 52-year-old lifted a famous treble at the Nou Camp while implementing an attractive style of football and offering young players a route into senior football.

If he impresses Spurs during talks, the club could plot to steal a march on Chelsea and bring him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before the season is over.
