Tottenham ‘to submit James Maddison bid’ as rivals Newcastle ready two swoops

Tottenham ‘to submit James Maddison bid’ as rivals Newcastle ready two swoops

Tottenham are reportedly set to table an opening offer for Leicester City playmaker James Maddison this week, with Newcastle focusing on other deals at this stage. Both clubs were keen on the England international heading into the summer window, though Spurs are set to attempt to steal a march on their rivals.

Ange Postecoglou is keen to tweak his squad in north London following his recent appointment, with Daniel Levy prepared to grant the ex-Celtic boss the spending power to bolster his ranks in all departments.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is set to become Spurs’ second signing of the summer after Dejan Kulusevski’s permanent move was confirmed, and the attention at the club has now turned to welcoming further arrivals through the door.

According to The Telegraph, Tottenham are looking to ‘thrash out’ a deal for Maddison this week and are preparing a bid of £40million for the playmaker in the hope that Leicester will reduce their asking price of £60m. Newcastle are said to have cooled their interest in the 26-year-old, with Spurs pushing to capitalise in case Eddie Howe’s side decide to return with an offer of their own.

The Magpies are instead looking to pounce talent from another relegated side, with Southampton the victim of a recent raid. It is reported that Newcastle are in advanced talks over a move for Tino Livramento and looking to capitalise on the club’s recent relegation to strike a cut-price deal.

The St James’ Park outfit are looking to reach an agreement for a deal worth £15m, though that is approximately half of Southampton’s asking price at this stage – with other clubs, including Brighton, monitoring his situation closely. Newcastle are said to have proposed a deal involving Ryan Fraser heading in the opposite direction, though it is unclear whether the Saints entertained the offer.

James Ward-Prowse has also emerged as a target on Tyneside, with Southampton resigned to losing the services of their club captain. Howe is said to be an ‘admirer’ of the 28-year-old.

However, negotiations between the two clubs have not opened regarding the midfielder at this stage. Newcastle are already set to welcome Sandro Tonali from AC Milan in that department in the coming days.

West Ham and Aston Villa have also been linked with Ward-Prowse this summer, with Tottenham and Liverpool also keeping the England international as an option if they push for further midfield reinforcements towards the latter stages of the transfer window.
