Tottenham will have ‘lots of players’ glad that Levy is firing Conte

Jermaine Jenas believes that several Tottenham stars will be pleased to see Antonio Conte sacked after his controversial post-match press conference last weekend. The Italian left no stone unturned when criticising his players and suggesting that Spurs are not willing to overexert themselves to end their trophy drought.

Conte’s shocking conference only accelerated his departure from Spurs, with the ex-Chelsea boss previously expected to depart at the end of the season when his contract was set to expire. Tottenham are now reportedly set to sack the boss imminently, having felt that the damage done in the eyes of the media is beyond repair.

Former Tottenham playmaker Jenas has now revealed that he thinks players will improve for the departure of Conte, telling The Mirror: “For the players, there will be bruised egos. Those who start will be thinking, ‘Did he need to say that? Why has he gone down that road?’

“But there will be a lot of players on the fringes thinking, ‘Brilliant, he’ll be on his way and I’m going to get another chance.’

“The dressing room is a tricky place around these moments but when someone is that passionate and angry, you have to believe he is telling the truth. At the same time, he’s culpable.

“He’s been at the club two years and this year has, since I’ve retired, been the least enjoyable. They’ve not played well. There are problems left, right and centre and the expectations have been so high.

“He had a decent summer window and the ability to set his team out how he wants. But all fans have been watching for months is negative football. That’s where he has to take as much responsibility as anyone else. But when he’s talking about the history of the club, I can’t argue with him. I don’t think anyone can, the proof is in the pudding.”

It remains to be seen whether Tottenham opt to act quickly and bring in a permanent replacement for Conte before the campaign concludes or instead decide to buy themselves some more time to weigh up their options by appointing Ryan Mason as interim manager until the summer.

Former target Julian Nagelsmann has been heavily linked with the soon-to-be vacancy in north London after he was sacked by Bayern Munich on Friday, with Mauricio Pochettino also waiting for a call from his former side having been vocal about his desire to return to Spurs.
