TRAI might help you kiss those spam calls goodbye! Here’s how | Digit

You’re concentrating on work, trying to cross tasks off your list when your phone rings out of the blue. It’s yet another spam phone call that’s broken your focus and derailed your train of thought. Sounds pretty familiar, right? Well, here’s some good news. The Telecom Regulation Association of India (TRAI) said it is working on its proprietary technology to help detect pesky spam calls. According to TRAI, Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC) is one of the biggest annoyances faced by the common public.

“Now complaints are reported against Unregistered Telemarketers (UTMs), where a surge has been seen in pushing various kinds of UCC SMSes. Additionally, UCC calls are also one of the concerns which need to be dealt with equally along with UCC SMSes,” it said, elaborating on the same.

The statement also said “TRAI in coordination with various stakeholders is taking necessary steps to check UCC from UTMs also. These steps include implementation of UCC detect system, provision of Digital Consent Acquisition, intelligent scrubbing of the Headers and Message templates, using AI (Artificial Intelligence) and ML (Machine Language), etc,”

TRAI is striving to curb those pesky phonecalls

In 2018, TRAI issued the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations to reduce the sheer volume of spam calls received by customers. It created an ecosystem of blockchain that requires telemarketers and commercial promoters to register on the platform and seek consent from customers to send messages and call them at any hour.
