Transfer news LIVE: Liverpool may get Darwin fund boost, De Jong Man Utd U-turn explained

The summer transfer window has only been open a couple of days but the Premier League’s elite clubs are already beginning to make their moves as they attempt to strengthen ahead of the new season. Liverpool are closing in on a mega move for Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, with an £85m deal expected to be confirmed in the coming days.

The Reds are not the only side expected to splash the cash, however, and their bitter rivals Manchester United have renewed hope that they can tempt Frenkie de Jong away from Barcelona after the midfielder reportedly changed his mind over a switch to Old Trafford.

Tottenham have already confirmed the signings of Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster, and are being linked with a whole host of other players, such as Middlesbrough wing-back Djed Spence, Everton forward Richarlison and Torino centre-back Gleison Bremer.

Meanwhile, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City also have a number of targets on their list, and it would be no surprise at all to see the Premier League spending record smashed by the end of the summer.

So, what will happen today? Keep an eye across all the latest rumours with Express Sport’s live coverage right here…

Liverpool set for £17m boost

Liverpool’s forgotten star Takumi Minamino could be set for a fresh start away from Anfield with a move that could hand a £17 million boost to the Reds’ transfer budget. Jurgen Klopp is in the midst of a hectic summer rebuild in attack, with a club-record deal close to being confirmed for Benfica forward Darwin Nunez.

Minamino has struggled to graduate beyond his peripheral role with the Reds since signing almost three years ago. The 27-year-old has scored 14 goals in 55 Reds’ appearances, and was also allowed to leave on loan for Southampton last season.

Fulham and Wolves are among the top-flight rivals credited with an interest in the Japan international, along with a potential return to the Saints. Now, French outlet FootMercato claim AS Monaco are also ‘very interested’ in a move for Minamino this window.

De Jong U-turn explained

Erik ten Hag is said to have told Frenkie de Jong that he is ‘planning to bring the good times back’ to Manchester United after promising his former player an integral role at Old Trafford, according to reports. The new Red Devils boss is looking to entice the midfielder into a summer switch from Barcelona and as of now, the signs are beginning to look very promising.

Initially, De Jong has made it crystal clear that his desire was to remain in Catalonia next season and beyond, despite United’s interest.

Yet with Ten Hag refusing to lie down, there is growing optimism that a deal is very much on the cards.

According to the Sunday Mirror, it’s Ten Hag’s personal talks with De Jong that have swung the balance.

Man Utd could deal rivals blow

Manchester United could indirectly deal a blow to Arsenal and Liverpool’s summer transfer plans by completing the signing of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. Manager Xavi Hernandez is ready to take his latest dip into the Premier League market to replace the Dutchman, targeting two of the top-flight’s most exciting stars.

United have entered formal talks with Barcelona over the transfer of De Jong after Erik ten Hag identified him as the priority target of his inaugural transfer window at Old Trafford. It is believed an initial fee in the region of the £65million Barcelona paid Ajax for his signature in 2019 would be enough to persuade them to sell.

And if the Catalan giants recoup their asking price for De Jong, Sport report they would look to reinvest the money to bolster Xavi’s midfield and attack this summer. In particular, he is interested in signing Leeds United winger Raphinha and Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves – two players who Arsenal and Liverpool respectively have displayed interest in.
