True Detective: Night Country: Jodie Foster Hunts a Serial Killer in Alaska in First Trailer
Move over, Hannibal Lecter, because Jodie Foster’s ready to pursue a new serial killer.
Warner Bros. Discovery released the first trailer for True Detective: Night Country on Wednesday at the unveiling event for Max, the new streaming service that combines the content from HBO Max and Discovery+.
Set in Ennis, Alaska, the drama series follows Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) as they investigate the disappearance of eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station. In addition to Foster and Reis, the fourth season stars Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Isabella Star Lablanc, Aka Niviâna, Anna Lambe, Joel D. Montgrand, Christopher Eccleston, and John Hawkes.

“Some people come to Alaska to escape — get away from something. Sometimes they come here looking for something,” Foster says in the trailer. “Sometimes they find it.”
The trailer shows tension between Foster’s Liz Danvers and Reis’ Evangeline Navarro while working together to solve the murder case. In the final clip, Foster is wandering through the snow and darkness as the frozen ice cracks beneath her feet.
Showrunner Issa López serves as writer, executive producer, and directs all episodes. True Detective: Night Country marks the first installment of the anthology series without creator Nic Pizzolatto.
Harrelson and McConaughey portrayed the lead detectives in the first True Detective season in 2014, while Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Vince Vaughn starred in Season 2 the following year. Mahershala Ali played Wayne Hays in Season 3 in 2019.
True Detective was a stunning hit when it first released back in 2014, but reviews of the second season were less kind. We felt that Season 3, which released in 2019, helped to get the series back on track.
True Detective: Night Country premieres on Max in 2023.
