Truecaller WhatsApp integration soon to identify spam calls, rollout later this month
Truecaller WhatsApp in beta
Truecaller is known for its spam call identification system that is genuinely a big help in countries like India where the issue is highly prevalent. Truecaller CEO Alan Mamedi confirmed that the company’s caller ID service will be available on WhatsApp soon, according to a report by Reuters. Mamendi mentioned that there’s been a spike in spam call reports from WhatsApp users in India, and this feature will help users identify potential spam calls. He added that telemarketers are now moving to internet calling but this is still a fairly new practice.
There are no proper details on how the feature will work on WhatsApp but it will probably alert users of any incoming call that could be spam. Truecaller integration in WhatsApp is currently in beta, and it will be rolled out globally later this month.
WhatsApp is the most used messaging platform in India with over 400 million monthly active users. India is also the fourth country with the highest number of spam calls, according to a Truecaller report. These statistics just prove that WhatsApp in India can easily become a hotbed for scammers.
There have been efforts from the government to reduce spam calls. Earlier this year, TRAI asked telcos to use AI filters to block telemarketing calls. WhatsApp also give users the option to report and block numbers on the app but it looks like a broader and automated control is required for this issue.
