Twitter-killer Threads goes past ChatGPT, becomes the fastest app to have 100M
Meta’s Twitter rival Threads has gone past 100 million users in just 5 days since its launch. Threads has also taken away ChatGPT’s crown as the fastest-growing consumer product. Threads was launched on July 6, 2023 in a bid to become the ‘public conversations app with 1 billion people on it’.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg informed about the milestone of reaching 100 million users in just 5 days since launch through a post on Threads. He also noted that the demand for the social media app is ‘mostly organic’ and many promotions haven’t even been turned on yet.
OpenAI’s generative AI-based chatbot ChatGPT had garnered 10 million daily users in 40 days since launch and 100 million daily active users in around 2 months after its launch. At the time, ChatGPT had become the fastest company to get to 100 million daily active users by a wide margin beating Instagram, TikTok and other social media giants.
In contrast, Twitter had a total of 240 million daily active users by July 2022, as per a company filing. However, web analytics company Similarweb notes that Twitter’s web traffic is down by 11 percent compared to the same time last year after the Threads launch.
In a recent interview with the Verge, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri revealed that the Threads app is intentionally designed to steer clear of news and politics. He noted that the inclusion of such content invites excessive scrutiny, negativity, and compromises the integrity of the app.
Twitter in its response has alleged Meta of utilizing its trade secrets in the development of the company’s latest social media venture. The Elon Musk led platform demanded that Meta stopped using confidential data and has threatened a potential lawsuit.
Many alternatives to Twitter have emerged following Elon Musk’s $44 billion acquisition of the social media giant in October last year. Since the acquisition, Musk has managed to alienate Twitter users and advertisers with some of his chaotic decisions.
