Twitter may soon let celebrities cancel their free Blue subscription – Times of India

Who doesn’t like a blue check before their name, showing they are the real ones, but not anymore? After Musk‘s takeover, Twitter made the verified blue check paid, a part of its Blue subscription. And also, Twitter put a label that the blue checkmark is being paid for but is not received for their notability or authenticity.
While it has been fine with users who are paying for it, it has not gone well with a number of celebrities who used to have the ‘legacy’ blue checkmarks.
According to an app researcher, Nima Owji, Twitter is extending its Manage Subscription page for celebrities who receive a complimentary subscription to Blue so that they can cancel their subscription. However, it will not be as simple as cancelling the subscription, and these users will have to contact Twitter support to cancel the Blue subscription.
On 4/20, Twitter removed all the blue checkmarks from legacy verified users, only to be left with chaos. After a huge backlash, Musk gifted a few, including Stephen King, James Lebron, and William Shatner, some celebrities who have been critical of Musk charging money for verification, a free subscription to Twitter Blue.
A few days later, most of them (even the dead ones), with over a million followers, who lost the blue checkmarks, received their check marks back, with the label reading, “This account is verified because they are subscribed to Twitter Blue and verified their phone number.” Even though they did not pay for it or even verify their phone number, said the celebrities.
Hollywood actor Chrissy Teigen, one of the celebrities to have received the free blue checkmark, referred to it as a “badge of shame.” She was quick to find a way to make the checkmark disappear and suggested the same to Jon Favreau.
