Twitter puts its Blue Verified accounts plan on hold, here’s why – Times of India
If there’s one thing that Elon Musk has been extremely — perhaps more than one would have expected — vocal then it’s the Verified account system on Twitter. A rather ill-fated $8 plan was rolled out and created quite a bit of chaos as a lot of impersonators ended up misusing the system. Now, Musk has said that the whole process of Blue Verified account is on hold.
Musk said in a tweet, “Holding off relaunch of Blue Verified until there is high confidence of stopping impersonation.” He also suggested that Twitter may go for different coloured checks as well. “Will probably use different colour check for organisations than individuals,” he added in the tweet.
Last week, Musk had said that Blue Verified — that’s what Musk insists on calling the verified or blue-tick accounts on Twitter — wild be rolled out on November. “Punting relaunch of Blue Verified to November 29th to make sure that it is rock solid,” he had tweeted.
Coloured ticks on the way?
Earlier this month, for a brief period of time, Twitter had introduced a grey tick for official accounts. Musk quite instantaneously said that he had “killed it”. The grey tick was rolled back but the official tag still remains on Twitter. Musk’s recent tweet does suggests that a different colour check is certainly in the works. Whether it’s grey or some other colour that remains.
A lot of questions remain unanswered about Verified Blue. It’s not clear what the cost of it will be across the world. Musk has made it clear that people will have to pay $8 to get a verified accounts but had also said that the price will vary from country to country. Twitter users will be hoping that there is more clarity on the subject when the feature is now rolled out, whenever that may be.
