Twitter to Charge Developers for API Access in Elon Musk’s Latest Revenue Push
Twitter Inc. said it would start charging for API access as it tries to monetize more of its services under
Elon Musk
‘s ownership.
The company said that starting on Feb. 9, it would offer a paid basic tier to access its application programming interface, or API, which lets developers analyze some internal data, including tweets, and build tools with it.
Twitter didn’t say how much it would charge, but said it would share more details next week. The company didn’t immediately return a request for comment Thursday.
The company has transformed both its internal ranks and its user experience since Mr. Musk took over in October. In an effort to save money after Mr. Musk’s $44 billion deal, Twitter has laid off thousands of employees, introduced a paid subscription service and, now, is charging people trying to access its API.
Twitter currently offers both a free and paid version of its API, charging as much as $2,499 a month to the most active users.
For example, developers can use Twitter’s API to analyze tweet archives on the platform or build bots that automatically tweet about where Mr. Musk’s jet is flying.
Many companies offer free APIs with publicly available data so developers can build useful tools for them.
“We’re committed to enabling fast & comprehensive access so you can continue to build with us,” Twitter said early on Thursday morning Eastern time.
Mr. Musk’s team has recently tried to generate cash by talking with investors about raising money to repay some of Twitter’s debts, The Wall Street Journal reported last week. The company has also auctioned office supplies from its headquarters.
