Two MCA Apex Council members protest not being informed about Muzumdar’s appointment as Mumbai coach | Cricket News – Times of India
MUMBAI: It seems that the process of selection of Amol Muzumdar as the head coach of the Mumbai senior team has not gone down well with two members of the Mumbai Cricket Association’s (MCA) Apex Council, who are miffed with the MCA’s office-bearers, particularly the secretaries, for not keeping them in the loop about the same. The issue is set to come up for discussion at the MCA’s Apex Council meeting on June 11.
In separate emails (TOI is in possession of both emails) to MCA secretaries Sanjay Naik and Shahalam Sheikh, Apex Council members Unmesh Khanvilkar, a former secretary of the association, and Ajinkya Naik conveyed their displeasure at not being consulted or informed during the process of Muzumdar’s appointment as Mumbai coach.
In his email, Khanvilkar wrote: “I congratulate Muzumdar for being named as the coach of the Mumbai senior team for the 2021-22 season. It’s a pleasure to have him as coach of the Mumbai senior team. However, I suggest that we should not only restrict him to only the senior team of the association, but we should involve him in grooming the talent for the future.”
“At the same time, I would like to highlight my utter displeasure and resentment by the secretaries regarding the attitude towards the apex members. We all are elected members of the association but there is always a silent divided line between the office-bearers and the committee members. In certain decisions, we as Apex members were categorically involved and opinions were sought when necessary.
“However, now we had a process done for the head coach and selection of the same as well but there is NO basic communication or information email regarding the same. I would like to highlight my utter displeasure and resentment by the secretaries regarding the attitude towards the Apex members. We all are elected members of the association but there is always a silent divided line between the office-bearers and the committee members. Do we Apex members exist for you? It’s most disheartening to know that such vital information like selection (not even the names) and finalization of the Mumbai senior team’s coach doesn’t reach us Apex council members as official communication. I hope to have a reply. I also request you to take this email for the discussion during the upcoming Apex Council meeting on 11th June 2021.”
Reiterating the points highlighted by Khanvilkar, Naik wrote: “As an elected Apex Council member of MCA, I have come across certain decisions being taken by the secretary of the association without following the constitution/charter of the association and the non-observance of customary practice and the procedure prescribed therein. That one such instance which I would like to bring to your notice, is the appointment of the coach, which has been done in an arbitrary manner without following the procedural rules. It is learnt through media reports that Muzumdar has been appointed as coach in an arbitrary manner, without taking approval of the Apex Council in a meeting or through email. Furthermore, the said appointment was never communicated to the members of the association.”
Muzumdar’s appointment would “place a huge financial burden on the MCA, with the domestic season in doubt,” wrote Naik. “In the recently held BCCI AGM, the start of the domestic season wasn’t even discussed. It all depends on the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. In fact, the BCCI terminated a few contracts because they are not sure of the domestic season. While the credentials of Muzumdar are not in doubt, in my view making any new appointment in this situation will be a huge financial burden on MCA with the domestic cricket season in doubt,” stated Naik in his communication.
“It is a matter of grave concern that the organization is being run in a manner prejudicial to the interest of the association. It is also learnt that certain standing committees have been formed without consulting and involving the Apex Council members. The aforesaid actions are contrary to the whole democratic system on which the association has been built,” Naik concluded.
Responding to the allegations of these Apex Council members, MCA secretary Sanjay Naik told TOI: “The Mumbai coach is appointed by the MCA’s Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) as per the provision of the constitution and not the office-bearers. In the past too, the CIC never consulted the office-bearers or Apex Council on these appointments.”
