Unity Announces Third Layoff Since 2022, This Time Affecting 600 Employees

Unity Software, the company which is known for its Unity game engine, has once again announced another round of layoffs. The company had previously already laid off around 500 employees. This is the third time that Unity is executing its plans of reducing its workforce, this time affecting around 600 employees.

Unity continues laying off employees

Unity has long been a part of this trend of companies laying off their employees on a mass scale, citing reasons like inflation. Some of the other major companies that have raised the death knell in the recent times include Microsoft, Twitter, and Amazon, even game publishers like Take Two and Riot Games. This is the third round of layoffs after Unity removed 200 employees from the company in 2022, followed by the removal of 300 employees in January 2023.

This news of Unity’s latest round of layoffs emerged in a company filing with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. The report published on May 2 mentions that the company “announced the reduction of approximately 600 employee roles, or 8% of its workforce as it restructures specific teams in order to continue to position itself for long-term and profitable growth.”

While the grounds of this new round of layoffs are not clear, Unity CEO John Riccitiello addressed the employees directly during their job cuts in January.

“We reassessed our objectives, strategies, goals and priorities in light of the current economic conditions. While we remain focused on the same vision, we decided that we need to be more selective in our investments to come out stronger as a company.”

A Wall Street Journal report states that with this latest round of layoffs at Unity Software, the company will be left with approximately 7000 employees. Additionally, Unity also reportedly plans to reduce its offices to less than 30 from its current number of 58.
