Urban Meyer ‘Assured’ Shad Khan He Believes in His Heart Jaguars Can Improve

The Jacksonville Jaguars fell to 2-11 with Sunday’s 20-0 loss to the Tennessee Titans, but head coach Urban Meyer remains confident in his team’s abilities.

The first-year coach defended his squad in a one-on-one meeting with owner Shad Khan after the game.

“I assured him that I still believe in my heart that we will [turn this around],” Meyer said, per Mark Long of the Associated Press. “How fast? That depends on … I still think there’s good pieces.”

Meyer won three NCAA titles with Florida and Ohio State, but his first stint in the NFL has not gone as hoped. The Jaguars have lost five straight games and rank 31st in the league in scoring offense with 13.8 points per game.

Beyond the struggles on the field, Meyer has had “multiple run-ins with players and other coaches in recent weeks,” according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

The reported incidents include veteran Marvin Jones leaving the facility after continued criticism of the wide receiver group and the head coach calling his assistant coaches “losers.”

Meyer denied those reports, per Albert Breer of The MMQB.

The coach also gained headlines after the Week 4 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals when he spent time in a bar rather than travel home with the team. Khan called the conduct “inexcusable” at the time. 

Despite the issues, ownership has showed no signs of considering a coaching change.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Oct. 31 that Khan was “all-in” on Meyer.

He could give Meyer time to turn things around despite a miserable first season, but Jacksonville is now guaranteed to have its 13th campaign without a winning record in the last 14 years.
