US Cyber Trust Mark: US government introduces “Cyber Trust Mark,” a security labelling program for smart home devices – Times of India
The US government is implementing measures to enhance awareness towards the safety of smart home devices. The Biden-Harris administration introduced the “US Cyber Trust Mark” initiative, which seeks to authorise and categorise Internet of Things devices in order to protect users from cyber attacks.
The certification program covers various connected devices used in homes, including smart refrigerators, microwaves, TVs, and fitness trackers. It may expand beyond the smart home automation field.
By the end of 2023, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will define the necessary cybersecurity standards for consumer-grade routers.
Without proper security measures in place, bad actors can easily manipulate these routers for eavesdropping and cyber attacks on other devices. NIST’s evaluation criteria will assess factors such as incident detection capabilities and strong default passwords to determine if a product should be certified and labelled.
Additionally, the US Department of Energy is collaborating with National Labs and other partners to determine the most effective approach to classify smart metres and power inverters as meeting cybersecurity requirements.
Several electronics, appliance, and consumer product manufacturers, retailers, and trade associations, including Google, Samsung, Logitech, Amazon, Best Buy, and the Connectivity Standards Alliance (which is home to the Matter smart home standard), have come in voluntary support for the certification.
According to FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, the new mark would help consumers feel more secure about the products they purchase while benefiting manufacturers.
To qualify for the mark, products must meet specific criteria set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The FCC has initiated a rule-making process to establish these standards and seeks public feedback. In addition to displaying logos, the participating devices would include QR codes to access updated security information easily.
The Consumer Technology Association said that the products that meet certification standards will be showcased at the annual January industry event, CES 2024, once the FCC finalises its rules.
