Usyk’s wife takes fresh swipe at Fury after fight breakdown
Oleksandr Usyk’s wife Katerina has torn into Tyson Fury after the undisputed fight with her husband collapsed on Wednesday. The fight fell through after an agreement couldn’t be reached on the rematch split.
Usyk wanted the agreed 70-30 split for the first fight to be reversed in his favour if he won the inaugural encounter while Fury refused to accept anything less than 50-50. Fury’s promoter Frank Warren raised hopes briefly yesterday when he declared he was going to enter into last-gasp negotiations with Usyk’s side, but they couldn’t get the deal over the line.
Confirming the news to iFL TV, Usyk’s promoter Alexander Krassyuk said: “We were desperate to find a compromise. Tyson didn’t want to compromise. Usyk stayed in training camp for three months because the original date was in February. Fury didn’t even train.
“He [Usyk] accepted 70-30, but how much would he have to accept more? He [Usyk] agreed to 70-30 [for April 29th], having in mind that the winner would have 70-30 for the rematch. If you’re fighting in England, you can be robbed by the judges. We’ve had this in the past.
“Usyk, when he accepted 70-30, his understanding was 70-30 would be the split for the winner for the rematch… The anticipated purse for Usyk [against Fury] would be three, four times lower than his previous fight [against Joshua]. So when I hear people say that Usyk is going to earn extraordinary money, this is not true.”
With Fury pricing himself out of the fight, Usyk’s wife Katerina took aim at the Brit’s greed. Posting a photoshopped picture of Fury in a dress with the caption “Gypsy Queen”, Katerina wrote on her Instagram story: “And for the last time. Being greedy is very bad!!! The best is yet to come!!!”
Usyk will now begin negotiations this weekend for a fight against WBA mandatory Daniel Dubois, who is also represented by Warren. In his last fight against Kevin Lerena, Triple D tore his ACL and there were some doubts as to whether he could take up the Ukrainian’s challenge.
However, Warren confirmed to Express Sport a few weeks ago that the Brit is back in training and can return to action as early as mid to late May. If for whatever reason Dubois isn’t able to face Usyk next then the IBF and their No1 contender Filip Hrgovic will have the opportunity to order a mandatory fight with Usyk.
