Valve Adds Greater Details to Steam Community Guidelines and Rules
Valve has just updated Steam’s community guidelines and rules, providing greater depth for conduct on the platform. There’s now more details for users on what they can do and what they’re not allowed to do on Steam.
The company said in the announcement, “Beginning today, you’ll see we’ve made some updates to Steam’s Rules and Guidelines and Steam’s Online Conduct Rules. These updates are intended to add context and specificity to how we already apply these in practice to all behaviors and content across Steam.”
Valve did not specify the changes made, but they have been highlighted by PC Gamer through the use of Internet Archive by comparing the older and newer version of the guidelines. Earlier, Steam had brief pointers on what a user shouldn’t be doing on Steam. There were guidelines which stated players shouldn’t “flame or insult other members,” “derail a thread’s topic,” “post spam,” and more.
The new Rules and Guidelines page expands upon these pointers to give more context with examples under each category. There are also expectations set for users by Valve with these new categories:
- Be respectful of yourself and other players
- Be constructive and avoid off-topic content
- Commercial content is not permitted
- Don’t discuss or engage in unlawful or prohibited activity
These categories also include factors that are considered an offence. There are also now individual sections on the rules page for user reviews. New pages for user-uploaded images and Steam community groups have also been added. An FAQ on how the rules are enforced has also been added by Valve.
