Van Dijk decks Argentina’s Parades as Netherlands bench invades pitch
Virgil van Dijk body-slammed Leandro Paredes in the final stages of Netherlands’ crazy World Cup quarter-final clash with Argentina after a fiery incident saw the Juventus loanee smash the ball into the Holland dug-out. The South American side were leading 2-1 after goals from Nahuel Molina and Lionel Messi before Wout Weghorst pulled one back for Louis van Gaal’s side to restore some faith heading into the closing minutes.
Nathan Ake was desperately trying to launch the ball forward when he was cynically fouled by Argentina’s Paredes, who was trying to relieve some pressure on his side.
Following the foul, the 28-year-old lashed the bouncing ball straight into the Holland dug-out which was parallel to the incident.
It’s safe to say his antics did not go down well as a host of Holland substitutes rushed out straight onto the pitch in Paredes’ direction.
Tensions then boiled over as the Holland players squared up to the Argentina players as referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz tried to regain control.

Teun Koopmeiners was the man over the top of the ball and boy did he deliver, sliding through the cutest of passes to substitute Weghorst to slide Holland level.
It was a moment of sheer brilliance in a clutch moment where the stakes really couldn’t have been higher.
Cody Gakpo had been desperate to shoot from the free-kick but Koopmeiners grabbed the ball and made sure he was the man to take it.
The chemistry between him and Weghorst was simply magical with Holland staring elimination in the face as they forced the game into extra-time.
