Vettel shares true feelings on Alonso flying high in his old seat

Sebastian Vettel claims he has no regret in retiring from Formula One last year. The four-time world champion is also pleased to see Fernando Alonso succeed in his old seat at Aston Martin in the early races of this season.

Vettel retired from the sport at the end of last season after 16 years. He had a difficult last couple of campaigns at Aston Martin and decided the time was right to call it a day.

Aston Martin finished seventh in the Constructors’ Championship in 2022 with Vettel 12th in the driver standings. But they have seen a huge improvement in 2023 already, with Alonso earning three third-placed finishes in the first three races of the season.

Vettel says there was always going to be an improvement on last season’s performance. But he does not regret leaving when he did.

Vettel said at a Bio Bienen Apfel event: “I don’t regret (leaving F1 and Aston Martin). The first thing, of course, is joy, which is more important than anything else.

“I know the team very well from the last few years and I’m happy that they are doing so well. That 2023 was going to be a better year than last season I think was obvious, because last year was pretty bad, so it was expected.

“Of course, you never know what the others are doing, but it was going to be better. But no matter what’s happening now, I thought it through and made my decision, regardless of how things might have gone this year.”

Alonso left Alpine to replace Vettel at Aston Martin. The 41-year-old Spaniard is rolling back the years and Vettel is delighted to see him succeed.

He added: “I’m happy for him. I think there were actually many years where he didn’t have a good car, and yes, now he’s living that second spring or honeymoon.”

Vettel is six years younger than Alonso. So is there a chance he will return to the grid at some point in the future?

He hinted: “I think it’s very difficult to know what will happen next year.”
