Akshaya Moondra, Chief Financial Officer at Vodafone-Idea Limited, recently said Vi 5G would “transform customer experience and enhance business performance,” but did not give any specific timeline about the rollout. Even now, Vi has not yet disclosed any details about the public rollout of its 5G services. Meanwhile, its competitors, such as Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, are aggressively rolling out 5G services across the country.

The news comes just a few days after the Centre gave Vodafone Idea a boost by approving the conversion of Rs 16,000 crore worth of accumulated interest dues into equity. After that, the central government acquired a 33 per cent stake, becoming the largest shareholder in the telecom joint venture between Kumar Mangalam Birla’s Aditya Birla Group and the UK’s Vodafone.

5G in India

On October 1, 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally launched 5G services after the country’s 5G spectrum auctions were finished in August 2022. Only two of the three largest telecom companies in India are currently offering 5G services. Non-standalone access (NSA) technology was first used commercially by Airtel. The only Indian operator currently using the 700 MHz bands is Jio, and it has chosen to roll out 5G standalone access (SA) (5G low-band spectrum).
