Vijay Hazare Trophy: Mumbai go down to Pondicherry in last tie | Cricket News – Times of India

MUMBAI: It was like adding insult to injury. A day after they crashed out of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Mumbai completed their miserable campaign in the tournament with a rather stunning 18-run defeat against Pondicherry in a low-scoring thriller at Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.
It meant that the defending champions finished at the bottom of Elite Group B, with four defeats in five games and just four points for the sole win that they managed against Baroda.
On a wicket difficult for batting, Mumbai did well to skittle out Pondicherry for merely 157 in 46 overs, with seamer Mohit Avasthi taking four for 19.
In fact, they had reduced Pondicherry to 98 for eight in the 32nd over, before a 54-run partnership between veteran batsman Paras Dogra, who slammed a half-century (58, 84b, 6×4, 1×6) and Bharat Sharma (15) took them past 150.
Ironically, Mumbai’s innings followed a similar course. With off-spinner Fabian Ahmed taking four for 16 in 10 overs, they were reduced to 98 for eight in the 29th over, before a superb knock by Aakarshit Gomel (70, 127b, 5×4) and his 49-run stand for the ninth wicket with seamer Dhawal Kulkarni (18) took them closer to the target.
However, both Gomel and Kulkarni were out with the score at 139.
Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad continued his red hot form to smash his fourth hundred but Maharashtra despite their narrow win over Chandigarh couldn’t qualify for the knockouts from group D.
Brief Scores:
Pondicherry 157 in 46 overs (Paras Dogra 58; Mohit Avasthi 3-19) beat Mumbai 139 in 48.1 overs (Aakarshith Gomel 70; Fabid Ahmed 4-16) by 18 runs.
