Virat Kohli breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s 2 ODI records in just 2 months

India’s star batter Virat Kohli has added another record to his name. In the World Cup match against Sri Lanka, Kohli completed 1000 runs in ODIs this year when he reached 34. He has reached the 1000-run milestone in a year for the eighth time in his career, going past Tendulkar’s record of seven times.

This year, he is the third Indian batter to score more than 1000 runs in ODI in a year, apart from Shubman Gill and Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. In September during the Asia Cup, Virat Kohli had completed 13,000 ODI runs, becoming the fifth player to reach the milestone in ODIs, joining Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara.

According to ICC, Kohli has reached 13,000-run mark in 267 innings, becoming the quickest to the milestone. Sachin Tendulkar took 321 innings to reach that landmark.

Virat Kohli is also closing in on Tendulkar’s record of 49 tons. Virat has 48 ODI centuries to his credit in 287 matches. Sachin Tendulkar ended his ODI career with 49 centuries in 452 matches.

Winning the toss, Sri Lanka opted to bowl first. Sri Lanka were off to a terrific start when Dilshan Madushanka beat the defence of Rohit on the second ball of the game for the first breakthrough. Later, Kohli and Shubman Gill steadied Indian innings. Both fell short of centuries.

Kohli fell for 88 off 94 balls to a slower ball from Madushanka. Shubman Gill departed after scoring 92 off 92 balls. In 287 matches, Kohli has scored 13437 runs at a strike rate of 93.63 and an staggering average of 57.91. He has also scored 48 centuries and 69 half-centuries. In T20s, Kohli also averages more than 50 per innings. He is now placed fourth in the list of highest run scorers in ODIs after Tendulkar, KC Sangakkara and Ricky Ponting.
