Virat Kohli steps down from test captaincy

India’s test cricket captain, Virat Kohli, has stepped away from his role. His announcement comes shortly after India lost a three-match series to South Africa.

“It’s been seven years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance everyday to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there,” Kohli said in a statement he posted on Twitter.

The Delhi cricketer’s decision will see his seven year term as captain come to an end, mere months after he was replaced as the captain for the short formats – T20 and ODI – by Rohit Sharma.

“I have always believed in giving my 120 percent in everything I do, and if I can’t do that, I know it’s not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and cannot be dishonest to my team,” Kohli’s statement said.

India’s seven-wicket loss to South Africa in the last Test of the series also saw the team drop to fifth position in the World Test Championship standings.

Kohli took over from Mahendra Singh Dhoni in 2014 leading India in 68 tests, winning 40 matches and losing 17.

“Lastly, a big thank you to MS Dhoni who believed in me as a captain and found me to be an able individual who could take Indian Cricket forward,” he added.
