Vision Pro is ‘tomorrow’s engineering, today,’ says Apple CEO Tim Cook – Times of India

Almost two decades after Steve Jobs introduced the first-ever iPhone, Tim Cook took the stage to announce Vision Pro, Apple’s first-ever augmented reality headset, or as he calls it, a spatial computer.
While everyone has their thoughts reserved about the Vision Pro, Apple CEO Tim Cook says that it is the “most advanced piece of electronics equipment out there,” in an interview with “Good Morning America.”
He went on to add that “It is tomorrow’s engineering, today”. “So you’re going to live in the future and you are going to do it today,” Cook told the interviewer.
The Vision Pro is different from the Apple Watch, Apple’s last big category, as it does not depend on other devices to function. It can operate independently. In fact, it can replace other devices such as phones, tablets, and computers.
“Significant moment of change” for Apple
During his interview with “Good Morning America,” Cook stated that the release of this product signifies a significant moment of change for the company.”We started working on augmented reality quite some time ago because we saw it as a big idea, as a profound technology,” Cook said. “This is the next chapter in that, and it’s a huge leap.”
Apple’s interest in augmented reality (AR) became apparent in 2017 with the release of the iPhone 8, which showcased new AR features through the company’s ARKit. It was clear even then that Apple’s plans for AR extended beyond just the iPhone, suggesting that the company had more ambitious projects in development.
It is about the platform
“It is not about one thing, it is a platform. And so we can’t wait to unleash it to the developers so they can begin to work on applications for it,” he added.
“You can immerse yourself in movies, TV shows, and sports, and feel like you’re right there. You can take photos and videos and then enjoy those and bring back memories as if you were there and repeating that experience,” explains Cook.
From the presentation, one thing seems to be sure that it is not designed as a companion device, but rather as a potential replacement for other devices in the future. Well, that is a long road ahead, and with a price tag of $3,499, more than double what other virtual reality headsets cost, it is to be seen how many takers this tomorrow’s tech will find today.
