The Vivo V25 Pro (review), announced at a starting price of Rs 34,999, has a slew of camera features that make it a worthwhile device for image capturing. I compared the device with the OnePlus 10R (review) in terms of photography prowess, and the V25 Pro managed to come out on top in most categories of contention.

Another potential competitor for the V25 Pro  in the sub Rs 40,000 segment is the Nothing Phone (1) (review) which comes with a dual-camera setup. The Vivo V25 Pro, for its part, has an extra macro lens at the back supporting its primary and ultra-wide shooter. Both phones are at about the same price point with the Nothing Phone (1) starting slightly lower at Rs 33,999. In this camera comparison, let’s figure out which of the two devices is better for photography needs.

Daylight landscape

Let’s first look at daylight images from both phones. The Vivo V25 Pro has a 64MP Samsung ISOCELL GW1 primary sensor while on the Nothing Phone (1) comes with a 50MP Sony IMX766. In the comparison photo shot above, I have not adjusted the exposure levels manually nor have I tapped at any place to lock focus. These are simple point-and-shoot photos, a theme that will be implemented across the rest of this comparison.

From the shots, it can be seen that the Vivo V25 Pro prefers a more saturated look in its photos as is evident from the bright red tones on the structure attached to the slide. The Nothing Phone (1) manages to keep accurate colours including the sky’s correct shade of blue. Conversely, detailing across the board is better on the V25 Pro, with the leaves, grass and sand on the bottom defined clearly. Exposure and dynamic range are very much similar for both devices although the V25 Pro has a tad bit more visibility in the shadowy parts of the frame. This round can be considered a tie.

UHD Landscape

Both smartphones are capable of taking full-resolution pictures from their primary sensors. The resolution for the Vivo V25 Pro is 64MP which is why it can allow for a larger crop than the Nothing Phone (1)’s 50MP shooter. Without cropping into the shots, the Nothing Phone 1 manages to click pleasant images that are on par with the Vivo V25 Pro. However, when both images are cropped to 100 percent, the Vivo V25 Pro brings better details.

You can see the shaded seating area on the right of the frame quite a bit sharper than what the Nothing Phone (1) can do. The grass on the bottom and the plants at the centre also have a more accurate colour tone while being more detailed. Even the dynamic range is visibly better although not by a large factor. This round was taken by the Vivo V25 Pro.

Ultra-wide

The Vivo 25 Pro has an 8MP ultra-wide shooter, common in many phones that are in the affordable flagship space. The Nothing Phone (1) trumps this with a 50MP Samsung JN1 ultra-wide. Of course, with its higher resolution sensor, Nothing gets in a significantly sharper image that becomes apparent at about a 50 percent crop. There’s also better detail in the shadows and the colour temperatures match up with the primary shooter. Without cropping in, the Vivo V25 Pro, while being a bit saturated, showcases a more pleasing image. The colour of the sky is accurate while details also look sharper on the nearby shrubs. However, since all of this takes a hit on a bit of zooming in, the Nothing Phone (1) takes this round.

Selfies

The Nothing Phone (1) has a 16MP selfie camera while on the Vivo V25 Pro you get a 32MP shooter. From the images seen above, the former prefers a more contrasty look but also captures a bit more in terms of facial detailing. I also like how Nothing has maintained skin tones accurately while the V25 Pro has a brighter look. In terms of overall clarity of the shot, both images are good enough although the Vivo V25 Pro does, ever so slightly, overexpose the face. This round goes to the Nothing Phone (1) for getting in better facial details and skin tone.

Portrait shot

For bokeh shots, the Vivo V25 Pro offers the ability to manually adjust the amount of background blur, which is a feature that is not offered on the Nothing Phone (1). In the above V25 Pro shot, I adjusted the aperture to f/1.4 for a nice, shallow depth of field. Between the two shots, the Nothing Phone (1) has a more saturated look but apart from that, both devices have perfect edge detection and clean separation of the foreground from the background. This round is a tie.

Low-light images

Looking at images clicked by both devices at night, the Vivo V25 Pro takes better images in terms of overall detailing. The Nothing Phone (1)’s shot looks a tad bit overprocessed to compensate for noise in the night sky. Also, the red light on the right side is overblown while the V25 Pro exposes the light better and also retains the actual colours. You can also see that the trees present near the bottom are visible clearly on the V25 Pro’s shot but not so much in the image taken by the Nothing Phone (1). It can be said, that this round belongs to the Vivo V25 Pro.

Night mode on

Improvements are visible as soon as both phones turn on their respective dedicated Night mode feature. The Nothing Phone (1) benefits from increased clarity and detailing across the frame than when the Night mode was turned off. One can even say that the image is slightly sharper than the V25 Pro. However, the latter gets in the correct colours, and handles the exposure better on the illuminated advertisement banners present in the frame’s centre.

You can also see the trees present below are exposed better in the V25 Pro’s shot. Both phones do a good job of reducing the noise while not overprocessing the image. The Nothing Phone (1) actually does a better job at keeping the moving cars in focus. Overall, both images are good and from a neutral perspective, you can choose either shot to share on social media. Nevertheless, the Vivo V25 Pro takes this round for providing more details, better exposure and correct colours.

Macro photography

The Nothing Phone (1) doesn’t have a macro sensor like the Vivo V25 Pro. Instead, it uses the ultra-wide shooter to click higher resolution macro images that Vivo’s 2MP dedicated shooter will have a hard time matching. In reality, the Nothing Phone (1) doesn’t allow you to go as near the subject as the V25 Pro. Of course, you can crop further into the Nothing’s shot and it does churn out better colours than the V25 Pro. This round is won by the Nothing Phone (1).

Verdict

The final tally is three points to each along with two tied results. It is clear that the Vivo V25 Pro fares better than the Nothing Phone (1) when it comes to low light photography while selfies, macro and ultra-wide images are better on the latter. There is no overall winner here as both phones perform better in different aspects. You can choose either phone depending on your needs.
