Vodafone brings back shock EU roaming charges and the price won’t please customers

Vodafone customers travelling to Europe will soon be hit by shock new fees for using their smartphones. The UK network has just revealed that it’s following EE with the reintroduction of these controversial charges which could add as much as £56 to a family’s monthly mobile bill.

Vodafone has confirmed that the new fees will come into force from next January and will apply to anyone taking out a smartphone plan or SIM with the firm after August 11.

That means, as long as customers stick with their current plan or upgrade within the next few days they won’t be charged the new EU roaming fee.

The network says that it’s making the changes to give people more choice over what they pay for.

“The majority of our customers are not regular roamers. Indeed, fewer than half our customers roamed beyond the Republic of Ireland in 2019. And the reality is that including roaming – a service that costs us money to provide – in every plan means more than half of our customers are paying for something that they don’t use. What’s free for one person usually has to be paid for by someone else,” said Ahmed Essam, Vodafone’s CEO.

Anyone hit by the fee will find £2 per day added to their bill when using their devices in places such as Greece, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Germany.
