Warner Bros. Removes Gay References From Fantastic Beasts 3 for Chinese Release

Warner Bros. has edited the Chinese release version of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore to remove a short clip of dialogue from Professor Dumbledore, as it featured gay references. The six second long clip showed Dumbledore talking about a romance he once had with the movie’s antagonist in Grindelwald, who is played by Mads Mikkelsen, after he replaced Johnny Depp.

The clip included dialogues said by Jude Law’s character such as, “because I was in love with you” and “the summer Gellert and I fell in love.” The lines were removed from the movie after Chinese officials requested them to cut it.

In a statement released by Warner Bros. to Variety, the studio explained their decision to cut the dialogues which referenced the romantic bond between Law’s Dumbledore and Mikkelsen’s Grindelwald.

Moreover, the studio has even noted that the cut doesn’t drastically affect the movie, as their statement claimed that the spirit of the film remained intact.

The books revolving around the franchise never mentioned that Dumbledore was gay. However, author J.K. Rowling has since went on to claim that the popular character was indeed gay, and the character’s sexuality has now finally made it on to Fantastic Beasts 3.
