Italy’s Euro 2020 star Domenico Berardi got caught in controversy as he was pursued by police after clashing with an abusive supporter on Sunday. The incident occured after Sassuolo were knocked out of the Coppa Italia by Modena. The Serie A side lost 2-3, although Berardi scored a goal from the penalty spot. After the match, a fan crossed the line while confronting Berardi, who chased the supporter. The video of the incident has gone viral on social media and it also shows Berardi getting restrained by the police.

Since then, Berardi has issued an apology and wrote in an Instagram story, “I want to apologise for what happened outside the stadium after the game against Modena. We are professionals and, above all, we must be examples for youths and kids. Today I didn’t behave as such.”

“That’s because the things that I love the most, such as my wife and my son, were deliberately involved off the pitch, hurting me deeply. I also renew my apologies to the opposing fans”, he further added.
Against Modena, Sassuolo were two goals down within the first 30 minutes with Berardi pulling one back on the stroke of half-time. Modena extended their lead in the second half, followed by a late goal from Sasuolo two minutes from time. Modena held on to their lead to clinch a victory. Berardi could depart Sassuolo soon amidst transfer rumours. They finished 11th last Serie A season, with Berardi and Gianluca Scamacca scoring 31 goals in the league between them. Scamacca joined West Ham United in the ongoing transfer window.
