Watch: How Instagram’s video selfie verification system can be tricked by dolls – Times of India

Instagram again started to use video selfies to verify the user’s identity from this week. The security feature has been in works for quite some time now. The company tried to roll out the feature in August last year but was forced to delay the plan as several users were reportedly unable to verify their identity even after trying multiple times. Although at first it seemed that the Facebook-owned platform has rolled out the security feature globally after fixing the bugs and glitches, videos shared by users indicate that the face detection algorithm still does not work correctly and can be tricked using dolls.
Alexander Chalkidis shared a video on his YouTube channel where he demonstrates how the security feature can be fooled by a Barbie doll. In the video, Chalkidis is seen moving the doll’s head as per the directions shown on the screen and the algorithm verifies the doll as a user. “Video selfie complete” message can be seen on the screen after he completes all the steps. In a separate video shared by Chalkidis, Instagram’s verification system can be seen getting tricked by a Ken doll.

As of now, video selfie verification is only required while creating a new Instagram account. No existing users have received the prompt to share a video selfie till now. The company claims that the video will never be visible on the platform and it will be deleted within 30 days. It also says that it won’t collect biometric data or use face recognition technology. The feature was first spotted by social media consultant Matt Navarra.
Instagram is not the only one to use video selfies, the feature is also used by dating apps such as Tinder and Bumble where users need to share their selfie in a certain angle and pose to verify their identity.
