Despite controversy ahead of kick-off, Cameroon came back from behind to hold Serbia to a 3-3 draw in their Group G fixture at the FIFA World Cup 2022, in Qatar. The African team dropped star goalkeeper Andre Onana, with rumours of a clash with head coach Rigobert Song. It was Cameroon, who struck first with Jean-Charles Castelletto scoring in the 29th-minute to give them a 1-0 lead. But Serbia had other plans as Strahinja Pavlovic equalsing in the first minute of added time in the first-half and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic extended his side’s lead at the cusp of half-time. It looked like it was game over for Cameroon as Aleksandar Mitrovic made it 3-1 for Serbia in the 53rd-minute.

Following Mitrovic’s goal, the spotlight suddenly shifted to Cameroon’s star striker Vincent Aboubakar, who had earlier stated that he was as good as Egypt’s Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah. “I don’t give a toss if people don’t like it – I’m not impressed by him. I can do what he does. I just don’t have the opportunity to play in a big club”, he had said.

The Al Nassr man backed up his claim with a stunning cheeky goal, which would leave you wanting more. Making it 2-3 for Cameroon in the 63rd-minute, the 30-year-old made a perfect run to get on the end of Castelletto’s long ball. On receiving the pass, the striker chipped it over the goalkeeper with such style that it would even impress Diego Maradona from his grave.

Aboubakar’s goal was like a wake up call for Cameroon and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting equalised in the 66th-minute, stunning Serbia, who had expected it to be an easy game.

After full-time, Cameroon became the third African team to avoid defeat in a World Cup fixture, having been 2+ goals behind, after South Africa (2-2 vs Paraguay in 2002) and Ivory Coast (3-2 vs Serbia in 2006). Meanwhile, this is the second time Serbia have failed to win a World Cup match despite having a two-goal lead (also 2-3 vs Ivory Coast in 2006), becoming the fourth side to have done so in more than one match in the competition (also England, Sweden and USSR).
