Wawrinka scolds ‘baby’ Holger Rune after loss with post-match insult

Rising star Holger Rune was criticised by his Paris Masters first-round opponent for ‘acting like a baby on court’. The 19-year-old Danish star is finishing the season with a flurry after winning the Stockholm Open and was beaten finalist at the ATP 500 event in Basel, but has had his fair share of controversy this year.

The young Dane was scolded by opponent Stan Wawrinka after winning their close match 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3). During their post-match handshake Wawrinka said: “My advice to you is that you stop acting like a baby on court.”

Rune could be forgiven for getting excited by his Paris Masters victory after saving two match points in the second set and then a third in the decider before winning the tie-breaker. The young Dane’s form has seen him move into a career-high world ranking of 18 and he faces Hubert Hurkacz in the second round today.

Despite rising into the world’s top 20 Rune has also been in the headlines for the wrong reasons this season. At last week’s Swiss Indoors he was reportedly involved in a row with umpire Mohamed Lahyani in the final.

Tennisnet reported that during his defeat by Felix Auger-Aliassime in the ATP 500 event final the Dane was distracted by a changing advertising board while playing a decisive point in the match. Instead of the point being replayed his opponent was awarded the point sparking an angry rant by Rune.

The Dane reportedly yelled in the direction of umpire Lahyani:”What on earth are you doing! “You must be kidding me.” Earlier in the season Rune took issue with British player Cameron Norrie and the time he was taking during points in their US Open match.
