BENGALURU: With 212 runs to defend and Lucknow Super Giants struggling at 23/3 at the end of four overs, Royal Challengers Bangalore were in with more than just a chance. Then came the storm in the form of scorching innings from Marcus Stoinis (65) and Nicholas Pooran (62) and RCB’s inability to close out wins was exposed yet again.
During their one-wicket loss to Lucknow at the M Chinnaswamy stadium on Monday, RCB became the first team in the Indian Premier League to score in excess of 200 runs and yet lose a match on five occasions. Adding to their misery, the Faf du Plessis-led team was fined for maintaining a slow over-rate and docked Rs 12 lakh.

While RCB began well with the new ball, they lost the plot in the middle against LSG and it boiled down to poor execution from the bowlers. Left-arm pacer Wayne Parnell, who came in as replacement for Reece Topley, said it wasn’t a cause of worry.
“I wouldn’t say it is something to be concerned about, but obviously we have to pay attention to that. It is really good for us to keep getting wickets in the powerplay, that is the general trend that you want to try and keep on. I think maybe closing out, but again early days. Nothing to panic about. Just o resetting, reviewing and coming out again,” said the South African.

Parnell, who last featured in an IPL game in 2014, conceded RCB needed a few more runs on the board.
“It was always going to get close. I think the general trend at the Chinnaswamy (stadium) is obviously that it gets better under lights. Obviously, the way (Marcus) Stoinis played, that kind of allowed the guys to come in and take the game on early. Nicholas Pooran did that as well. Some very clean hitting and a couple of wickets at the backend to bring us back. Maybe if we had extra ten runs here and there, that could have been the difference. I felt that was a decent total. But we obviously had to execute things,” he explained.
