West Ham fan aged 19 hospitalised in Prague with fractured skull and brain bleed

A West Ham United supporter has been hospitalised with a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain after sustaining the injuries in Prague. Connor Reid made the journey to the Czech capital with his father to attend Wednesday’s final against Fiorentina but he remains in hospital after suffering a horrific ‘five-metre fall’, which left him with significant head injuries and meant he was unable to fly home to England.

The 19-year-old sustained the injury after a freak accident, having fallen off a wall he had been sitting on without knowing there was a steep 16ft drop on the other side.

The incident occurred after West Ham had beaten Fiorentina 2-1 at the Eden Arena after goals from Said Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen clinched a memorable night for the Hammers.

According to details listed on a GoFundMe page organised to help Connor and his father find a place to stay in the city and fly back to England, the impact of his fall caused a bleed on the brain. Doctors had to remove his spleen as part of the operation.

An update appeared on the page later on Friday to give the good news that Connor had been able to speak to his father on the phone. According to the information provided, doctors said the teenager is making ‘good progress’.

His father, Alex, explained how Connor fell after losing his balance while waiting for transport back to their accommodation.

“So after last night’s great performance, my son had a bad fall and is currently in hospital in Prague. Broken ribs, fractured skull and has his spleen removed,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Was due to come home tomorrow but don’t know what we will do now. Send him some love please #westhamfamily.”

When asked about how the incident came about, he said: “He was sitting on a wall waiting for his Uber home not realising there was a five-metre drop the other side and lost his balance.”

Generous West Ham fans have made dozens of donations after his aunt, Georgina Chalmers, set a target of £1,000 to bring Connor and his dad home from Prague.

At the time of writing, Hammers supporters and other family and friends have helped raise quadruple the amount needed with £4,216 given to help the stricken youngster.

Unfortunately, being stuck in Prague meant that Connor and his dad missed the club’s open-top bus parade through the streets of London on Thursday.

Around 70,000 fans were estimated to have been in attendance as they celebrated their historic triumph with their trophy. That is despite the fact a large portion of the 20,000 fans in Prague may not have returned in time to make it.

Club captain Declan Rice was seen posing with the trophy with his team-mates along with manager David Moyes, who celebrated claiming his first trophy success in his managerial career.
